The skiers lined up for the start at the head of Quidi Vidi lake ...in the ladies section Miss Summers took the lead practically from the start and was well in advance of the others as she forged gracefully along the Harding Road - (Evening Telegram, 9 March 1938)

Cross-skiing was embraced by the members of the Newfoundland Hiking Club to continue the pursuit of exercise during the winter.

The Club sponsored the first cross-country ski race in 1936, with trophies for the male and female winners. Twelve women registered for their division, which was a shorter route than that of the men. Both races started and finished at Quidi Vidi Lake. In 1938, Katherine (Summers) Cotter was the winner of two ski races held at St. John’s.
As with other sports, cross country ski races were discontinued due to the onset of World War II.
