Intro Sir Wilfred Grenfell IGA Lantern Slides Timeline Glossary

Introduction

The records of the International Grenfell Association (IGA) were donated to the The Rooms Provincial Archives Division formerly the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) by IGA representatives in June 1985. Since then, additional IGA-related material has been deposited at The Rooms Provincial Archives from a variety of sources. Within these IGA records are a variety of record types, including textual records, photographs and photograph albums, negatives, cartographic and architectural drawings, film reels and a large collection of magic lantern slides.

The IGA magic lantern slides form the most colourful pieces of the IGA fonds. Apart from their aesthetic beauty,
IGA 1-86
they represent two important functions of the IGA : they formed a visual record of IGA work and activity on the coast of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador, and they were a very important tool used to advocate and fundraise for IGA mission work.

This virtual exhibit contains only a small representation of the 1300 magic lantern slides in the IGA collection. The choice of slides depended mostly on the selection of various themes to represent the form and function of the IGA, the life of its leader Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, and the land in which the mission work was done. Archivists chose several themes, with links to administrative sketches, archival descriptions, and relevant web pages.

The process of digitization and inclusion of materials to this site will continue as opportunities for funding are found.
